HIV drug can raise the risk of heart disease: Study
From: THE MEDICAL NEWS
There are a handful of drugs effective in treating HIV/AIDS. However new research shows that some of these drugs can increase the risk of heart attacks. The results come from a Garvan Institute of Medical Research study involving 20 people, 10 taking the drug Ritonavir and 10 others the drug Raltegravir for one month.

Studies Suggest Heart Risk With Drug Avandia
Two large studies published today seem to confirm earlier studies suggesting the hazard of the widely used diabetes drug Avandia, developed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK).The first study analyzed a compilation of 56 studies involving more than 35,000 patients comparing Avandia to other treatments used to lower blood sugar in patients with diabetes. Patients taking Avandia were 33 percent more likely to suffer a heart attack compared to those on other treatments, according to the study. The second study by Dr. David Graham, associate director of the Food and Drug Administration, analyzed data collected from over 220,000 elderly patients in a Medicare health insurance program who either took Avandia or a its equivalent class drug Actos. Anticonvulsants increase suicide risk
Dr. Elisabetta Patorno, a research fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston has published a study this week in the Journal of American Medical Association which found that taking anticonvulsant drugs raise thoughts of suicide and risks of actually trying to commit suicide by two times the norm. The study was sponsored by the Harvard School of Public Health and HealthCore, a research subsidiary of WellPoint. WellPoint is a health benefits company that serves the Blue Cross Blue Shield network.
