Approximately $500,000 is available in federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to support a specialized training curriculum on the Mental Health Procedures Act of 1976 for judges, law enforcement, psychologists, social workers and other professionals in the criminal justice system.

CBO: Stimulus more expensive than expected, Medicare costs to double by 2020
A new Congressional Budget Office report "provides more ammunition for Republicans who say the stimulus has been long on spending and short on creating promised jobs," The Associated Press/ABC News reports. The report says the stimulus will cost $75 billion more than expected, because of increased unemployment, requirements for the food stamp program and the high popularity of an infrastructure bonds program. The report comes as Democrats consider a second stimulus bill that could include another extension of unemployment benefits, job creation tax credits and further help for jobless people to buy health coverage (Taylor, 1/26).

Divisions within pro-life groups on overhaul ease opposition
A previously steadfast coalition opposed to abortion - which feared that the health overhaul could divert federal money to support the procedure - is beginning to crack, The Christian Science Monitor reports. "Increasingly, abortion foes - including high-profile Catholic organizations and members of Congress - are saying that while the language aimed at preventing use of federal funds for abortion is not perfect, the bill is still worth passing as a first step."
